Intimacy starts with our connection with our baby.

I was cleaning and putting dishes away, being productive after putting Zephyr to sleep, preparing to have a date night of a movie with Levi, when 40 minutes later he woke up and started crying. I went into his nursery, picked him up, wiped his tears, and walked over to the rocking chair, where he laid his head on my heart and I rocked him back and forth, back and forth.

As I rocked him, I smelled the top of his head—the sweet smell on top of his soft spot that still smells so good.

I kissed him over and over again, rocking him… stroking his head, his cheeks, his body, rocking him back and forth repeating, “I love you, mama loves you.”

This true heart sensation filled my heart and my body… I felt so much gratitude, love, appreciation, and just true presence.

I had a whole house to clean… and truth is, all I wanted to do was sit there rocking my baby all night long… I debated ditching cleaning the house and even ditching movie night with Levi to just stay with Zephyr.

He had fallen asleep instantly when I rocked him, but I just couldn’t let him go.

I remembered and was reminded how he is almost 1, how much he has grown, and how there will be a day when I won’t be able to rock him and hold him anymore…

I then remembered how earlier in the day, Levi and I had made love… and how it’s so easy to want snuggles, cuddles, love-making with your spouse… physical touch as a love language.

When it hit me that “intimacy starts here”—how we learn intimacy starts with the intimacy with our parents… and we are teaching our babies intimacy…

Intimacy meaning INTO ME YOU SEE…

In every moment, every day of our life, we are teaching our baby how to be intimate—from nursing or not nursing them, kissing them, holding them, talking to them, giving them words of affirmation, spending time with them, playing with them, giving them gifts… showing them the best and, let’s be honest, worst, most unregulated, stressed out, and anxious parts of ourselves… on top of modeling to them with our partners what intimacy looks like between a man and woman… a mommy and daddy…

Intimacy… the future of what their future intimacy will look like starts with us, mama. We are modeling for them how to be intimate… especially my boy mamas—we are showing them and teaching them connection with a woman.

This all hit me. And so I decided to stay a little longer, hold him a little tighter, affirm to him how much I love him more times, and probably kiss him the same million amount I also do…

Before I decided it’s time for me time, cleaning time, and intimacy-with-my-husband time…
